The effects of a commercial sports drink on performance in high-intensity cycling was investigated. Nine well-trained subjects were asked to complete a set amount of work as fast as possible (time trial) following 24 h of dietary (subjects were provided with food, energy 57.4 ± 2.4 kcal/kg and carbohydrate 9.1 ± 0.4 g/kg) and exercise control. During exercise, subjects were provided with 14 mL/kg of either 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte (CHO-E) solution or carbohydrate-free placebo (P).

A lithium-polymer battery based on an ionic liquid–polymer electrolyte (IL–PE) composite membrane operating at room temperature is described. Utilizing a polypyrrole coated LiV3O8 cathode material, the cell delivers >200 mAh g−1 with respect to the mass of the cathode material. Discharge capacity is slightly higher than those observed for this cathode material in standard aprotic electrolytes; it is thought that this is the result of a lower solubility of the LiV3O8 material in the IL–PE composite membrane.

A series of new electrolyte materials based on a molecular plastic crystal doped by different iodide salts together with iodine have been prepared and characterized by thermal analysis, ionic conductivity, electrochemical and solid-state NMR diffusion measurements. In these materials, the plastic crystal phase of succinonitrile acts as a good matrix for the quaternary ammonium based iodides and iodine and appears to act in some cases as a solid-state “solvent” for the binary dopants. The materials were prepared by mixing the components in the molten state with subsequent cooling into the plastic crystalline state. This resulted in waxy-solid electrolytes in the temperature range from − 40 to 60 °C. The combination of structural variation of the cations, and fast redox couple diffusion (comparable with liquid-based electrolytes), as well as a high ionic conductivity of up to 3 × 10− 3 S cm− 1 at ambient temperature, make these materials very attractive for potential use in solid-state photoelectrochemical cells.

High current-carrying capacity and rapid, liquidlike diffusion were achieved in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on the plastic-crystalline electrolyte succinonitrile and the I/I3 redox couple (see diagram). This could lead to the development of true solid-state DSSCs without conventional organic-liquid electrolytes, which can cause problems with long-term device stability.

We report spectroscopic results from investigations of a novel solid polymeric fast-ion-conductor based on poly(acrylonitrile), (PAN, of repeat unit [CH2CH(CN)]n), and the salt LiCF3SO3 . From NMR studies of the temperature and concentration dependencies of 7Li- and lH-NMR linewidths, we conclude that significant ionic motion occurs at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature of these polymer-in-salt electrolytes, in accordance with a recent report on the ionic conductivity. In the dilute salt-in-polymer regime, however, ionic motion appears mainly to be confined to local salt-rich domains, as determined from the dramatic composition dependence of the ionic conductivity. FT-Raman spectroscopy is used to directly probe the local chemical anionic environment, as well as the Li+–PAN interaction. The characteristic δs(CF3) mode of the CF3SO3 anion at ~750–780 cm−l shows that the ionic substructure is highly complex. Notably, no spectroscopic evidence of free anions is found even at relatively salt-depleted compositions (e.g. N:Li~60–10:1). A strong Li+–PAN interaction is manifested as a pronounced shift of the characteristic polymer C=N stretching mode, found at ~2244 cm−l in pure PAN, to ~2275 cm−l for Li+-coordinated C=N moieties. Our proton-NMR data suggest that upon complexation of PAN with LiCF3 SO3, the glass transition occurs at progressively lower temperatures.

Plastic crystal materials have long been known but have only relatively recently become of interest as solid–state ion conductors. Their properties are often associated with dynamic orientational disorder or rotator motions in the crystalline lattice. This paper describes recent work in the field including the range of organic ionic compounds that exhibit ion conduction at room temperature. Conductivity in some cases is high enough to render the compounds of interest as electrolyte materials in all solid state electrochemical devices. Doping of the plastic crystal phase with a small ion such as Li+ in some cases produces an even higher conductivity. In this case the plastic crystal acts as a solid state “solvent” for the doped ion and supports the conductive motion of the dopant via motions of the matrix ions. These doped materials are also described in detail.

Composite electrolytes of the lithium-ion-conducting ceramic Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 and polyetherurethane/lithium triflate polymer electrolyte have been prepared. Microscopy has shown that adhesion between the ceramic and polymer phases is poor, with gaps up to 1 μm at the interface. When dry, the composites are no more conductive than the pure polymer electrolyte. Exposing the samples to the vapour of solvents such as DMF, acetonitrile or water produces a significant increase in conductivity, over and beyond simple plasticization of the polymer. Pretreating the ceramic with a compatibilizing agent improves adhesion at the interface with the polymer, but decreases overall conductivity in the case investigated.

The thermal and mechanical properties of the ionic plastic crystal N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium hexafluorophosphate have been investigated and the effect of adding a miscible polymer on the mechanical properties is reported. The physical properties of the pure plastic crystal are discussed in detail and for the first time the change in volume with temperature for an organic ionic plastic crystal is reported. An increase in volume in conjunction with increased conductivity supports the hypothesis that ion conduction within the plastic crystal proceeds via defects. For phase I and melting, the magnitude of the volume increase does not appear to be in accord with the subtle change in conductivity. This is suggested to be due to the presence of layer defects, which allow for correlated ionic motion, which does not increase the conductivity. Addition of polymer to the plastic crystal significantly increases the mechanical strength, decreases the conductivity, but has little effect on the phase behaviour, further supporting the hypothesis of vacancy-mediated conduction.

N,N,N,N-Tetramethylammonium dicyanamide (Me4NDCA) has been examined via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, conductivity, single crystal X-ray diffraction and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses, and was found to be highly conductive in the solid state (σ =10−3 S cm−2 at 420 K) and to also exhibit unusual plastic crystal behaviour. To investigate the correlation between such behaviour and the occurrence of molecular rotations in the crystal, 1H NMR second moment measurements are compared with calculated values predicted from the crystal structure. While DSC analysis indicates a number of solid–solid transitions at ambient temperatures, subsequent 1H NMR analysis of the Me4N+ cation shows that a variety of rotational motions become active at low (<240 K) temperatures, and that such transitions in rotational states occur over a range of temperatures rather than in a sharp transition. Conductivity analysis reveals that between 320 K and 420 K the conductivity increases by more than six orders of magnitude in the solid state, in line with the transition of the Me4N+ cation to a diffusive state, and that other phase transitions observed in this temperature range have no marked effect on the conductivity. Conduction in this solid state is therefore envisaged to involve a vacancy-diffusion model, involving Me4N+ cation vacancies.

A novel electrodeposition technique for preparing the catalyst layer in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells has been designed, which may enable an increase in the level of platinum utilisation currently achieved in these systems. This method consists of a two-step procedure involving the impregnation of platinum ions into a preformed catalyst layer (via an ion-exchange into the Nafion polymer electrolyte), followed by a potentiostatic reduction. The concentration of Nafion within the catalyst layer was found to have a significant bearing on the size of the platinum deposits. The preparation of catalyst layers containing a desired platinum loading should also be possible using this method. Surface areas of the platinum deposits were determined using cyclic voltammetry. The prepared catalyst was compared with a conventional electrode made from E-TEK Pt/C. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the dispersion of the platinum particles. Platinum loadings were determined quantitatively by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

N,N-Dimethylpyrrolidoium hydroxide (P11 OH) with polymer poly(tetramethyl ammonium acrylate) (PTMA) was investigated as an electrolyte in Ni/MH cells in this work. The efficiency and the performance of the electrolyte was discussed and elucidated with the performance of the cell. Their electrochemical characteristics had been investigated at different temperatures (25 °C and 50 °C) and different discharge current (15 mA g−1 and 30 mA g−1). The results show that the cell with electrolyte polymer-P11OH is dischargeable at these two temperatures, and a discharge capacity of 142 mAh g−1 at 25 °C has been obtained.
